Any vehicle in an accident that causes frame damages alongside major body or sheet metal damages or results in Steering Column impacts or improper operations of supplemental inflatable restraint systems requires checking of the Steering Column alignment. Check the Steering Column bracket assembly capsules through inspection of their position in bracket slots while examining loose conditions after manual hand pressure and pulling motions. Replace only the bracket when the capsules fail to properly seat and the attachment method is bolts and if the bracket attachment to the jacket assembly is welded then repair only the jacket assembly. The inspection requires measuring the lower edge of the upper jacket to a designated point on the bottom jacket. Replacing the jacket assembly becomes necessary if measurements do not fall within set specifications. The inspection must check for tab breakage in the bearing and adapter assembly as well as any sheared plastic on the Steering Shaft. The runout of the Steering Shaft should be checked using a dial indicator at the lower end of the shaft while rotating the wheel until it reaches 1.60 mm (0.0625 inches) tolerance.
