The vehicles that experience accidents resulting from frame damage, major body damage or sheet metal damage along with damage to the Steering Column and deployment of supplemental inflatable restraints systems might develop a damaged or misaligned Steering Column. Inspect the capsules which sit on the Steering Column bracket assembly while ensuring each capsule is tightly set within its bracket slot and checking for loose reactions when you push or pull manually. The inspection procedure requires checking the bracket attachment method to the jacket assembly; when brackets use bolts for installation replace them alone however welds require replacing the entire jacket assembly. Jacket assembly replacement is required when measurements show the lower edge of the upper jacket does not match the defined point on the lower jacket. Check the Steering Shaft for injected plastic breakage because replacement of the Steering Shaft becomes necessary when such shearing occurs. Immediate frame inspection is required for frame damage that might produce bent steering shafts before performing a dial indicator check of the Steering Shaft at its bottom section while wheel rotation to confirm runout values below 1.60 mm (0.06 inch).
