2005 GMC Safari Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to replace the negative battery cable on 2005 GMC Safari?
A: To replace the battery negative cable, make sure that safety is achieved in a way that a transmission is parked, parking brakes are engaged, and blocks the wheels. Disconnect the battery feed into the Distributor too. Use the j 39200 digital multimeter to measure the voltage drop from the ground (one being the negative battery terminal) and the frame while running the starter by placing one probe on the grounded battery post, and one on the frame. Also, measure the voltage drop between the positive terminal of the battery and the starter terminal stud, and the starter housing to the frame, while the starter will operate. In cases where 0.5 volts is exceeds, excessive resistance is indicated - the need for cleaning contacts and replacement of damaged cables or corroded clamps. When changing the cables, make sure they are of the same length and have the same diameter as the original. If you want to remove the battery negative cable, you should remove the cable bolt from the battery and then remove it from the engine and other ground leads before taking it off. For installtion, position the new battery negative cable, the same as the original, for both rwd and a4wd arrangements, attached it to the engine and tighten the nut to 40 n.m (29 lb ft). Mount the engine harness to the stud and tighten the nut to 25 n.m (18 lb ft), the negative cable ground lead from the battery to the radiator support, tighten the stud to 45 n.m (33 lb ft), and the battery negative terminal bolt to the battery with 15 n.m (11 lb ft).
