  A: Begin valve lifter replacement by removing both the Cylinder Head and gasket then the valve lifter guide bolts. Start by removing both valve lifters and guide then note that specific lifters can be difficult to remove because of gum or varnish buildup. The valve lifter remover (J 3049-A) can help when removing stubborn valve lifters. Sort and tag all guide components for correct reinstallation placement after lifting them out. In preparation for installation check and clean all valve lifters. To reuse valve lifters place them back exactly where they originally were positioned. Apply clean engine oil to both valve lifters and engine block valve lifter bores before placing lifter into its guide bore while aligning flat areas on lifter top with guide flat areas. Drive the lifter all the way through the guide bore before placing both valve lifters and guide into the engine block. Place the valve lifter guide bolt into position and secure it with a 12 newton-meter (106 pound inch) torque before moving on to install the Cylinder Head and gasket.
