The gasket and cylinder head must be removed to replace the valve lifters, the valve lifter guide bolts removed and the valve lifter and guide removed. Use a remover in case of any lifters getting stuck. Wipe down the lifters and lubricate them, place them wherever they were. Finally, install the cylinder head and the gasket.
