The Drive Shaft is a very significant component used in GMC Terrain vehicles to transverse mechanical power and torque from the engine or the transmission to the drive wheels to support vehicle function. This section is required to bear torsion and shear stress, and at the same time should be as light as possible in order to reduce inertial forces. GMC Terrain models employ a lot of one and two part Drive Shaft with some of them being provided with slip-in-tube technology for crash safety. In a wide variety of all wheel drive systems, there are multiple driveshafts used and transfer cases that split the power between the front and rear axles. They also may also include universal joints or splined joints where there are differences in the alignment of the driveshafts. In summary, driveshaft has a tremendous role in the performance and durability of GMC Terrain as it contributes significantly in various road conditions.

GMC Terrain Drive Shaft Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to replace the Drive Shaft on GMC Terrain?
    A:
The replacement process for propeller shaft starts with keeping the transmission in neutral position (N) before lifting the vehicle for support. Begin by marking the propeller shaft position then support it at the rear Differential before removing rear Differential drive flange mounting bolts. The propeller shaft needs support at the Transfer Case before removing the mounting screws attached there. While supporting the propeller shaft at its center support bearing you should remove the mounting bolts from the station. Two helpers must remove the propeller shaft from the automobile. After cleaning all mounting bolts for the center bearing and front and rear propeller shaft flanges users should apply threadlocker gm p/n 89021297 (Canadian P/N 10953488) on bolt threads. An assistant should help position the propeller shaft on the supports and align the reference marks that face the Transfer Case and rear Differential. Install the shaft to the output flange of the Transfer Case then tighten the mounting bolts by a finger. The center support bearing of the propeller shaft needs to be placed onto the vehicle before finger tightening the mounting bolts. After placing the propeller shaft over the rear Differential drive flange it becomes necessary to finger tighten all rear mounting bolts. Vehicle damage can occur when handling fasteners therefore the necessary precaution is vital. Apply 35 nm (25 lb ft) torque to the front mounting bolts before applying 25 nm (19 lb ft) to the center support bearing mounting bolts and finally tightening the rear mounting bolts for the propeller shaft yoke to the rear drive axle to 50 nm (37 lb ft). Lower the car after removing supports from the propeller shaft.
