When Pontiac launched the Bonneville in 1957 it presented itself as a full-size vehicle before becoming a mid-size model in 1984. As a premium full-size sedan the Pontiac Bonneville entered the market before it shifted into convertible production until its evolution included progressive engine and transmission technology updates. In their initial release Pontiac installed a 287 cu in (4.7L) Strato Streak V8 engine before changing to the 389 CID V8 model which generated 300 hp in 1959. The Pontiac Bonneville selection expanded to include three different engine options starting with the 3.8L Series II L36 V6 followed by the 3.8L Series II L67 V6 and ending with the 3.8L L32 V6 which found a balance between performance and fuel economy. The Northstar V8 engine with 4.6L capacity did not appear in production vehicles of the Bonneville model. The tenth-generation Bonneville implemented four-speed automatic transmissions that later added five-speed automatic transmissions to boost the performance and handling capabilities. From 1986 until the starting date for 1987 model production the Pontiac Bonneville exclusively had rear-wheel drive but followed with the introduction of front-wheel drive systems when the 1987 models were released. The Pontiac Bonneville achieved better drivability along with reliability because its platform flexibly adapted and added engineering innovations during different model years. Genuine parts improve both performance and longevity in Pontiac Bonneville models because they uphold factory requirements for reliability. The Pontiac Bonneville serves as a highly important vehicle that reflects outstanding craftsmanship and maintains an extensive quality-oriented history.
