Between 1976 and 1995 Pontiac produced three Sunbird generations which integrated performance values through enhanced efficiency updates throughout their manufacturing timeline. Between 1976 to 1980 the first-generation Pontiac Sunbird existed as vehicles constructed from the GM H platform in two distinct body shapes consisting of a 2-door notchback coupe and a 3-door hatchback configuration. GM J platform technology was used to start the production of the second-generation Sunbird when it included a new 4-door sedan model in 1982. The initial first-generation Pontiac Sunbird manufacturing began with the 2.3L inline-four engine which delivered 78 horsepower using one-barrel carburetors yet achieved 87 horsepower through two-barrel carburetors. Customers wanting enhanced performance could choose the optional Buick 2.5L four-cylinder engine from the Pontiac Sunbird lineup because it generated 90 horsepower. During 1991 the Sunbird gained a new 2.0L SOHC MPFI four-cylinder engine which delivered better gas efficiency and 110 horsepower. During its 1986 release the Pontiac Sunbird GT model included a 1.8L turbocharged four-cylinder engine that delivered 150 horsepower together with pop-up headlights. The Pontiac Sunbird continued with a 97-inch wheelbase throughout its manufacturing period because this platform strengthened road handling and stability. Because manufacture standards are strict the Pontiac Sunbird vehicles can maintain longevity through the availability of authentic components.
