    Q:
How to Ensure Proper Installation of the Rack and Pinion Boot on Cadillac CTS? Posted by Customer
    A:
Before replacing the Rack And Pinion boot the technician must install the Steering Column anti-rotation pin (J 42640) onto the Steering Column. Begin by elevating the vehicle and take out the tire and wheel. Prior to removing the Steering Column or intermediate shaft always maintain a lock position and wheel alignment because this stops steering gear damage while preventing lost steering control. To disconnect the intermediate shaft from the power steering gear you must first remove the intermediate shaft lower pinch bolt. Follow by detaching the power steering gear retaining bolts plus the outer tie rod. Then maneuver the power steering gear toward the dust boot's accessible side. The installation process starts by removing the inner bracket's jam nut then moving to the outer tie rod clamps before finally removing the Rack And Pinion boot . Install the new Rack And Pinion boot while also installing a new inner clamp during the installation process. The keystone clamp plier (J 22610) enables you to properly crimp the Rack And Pinion boot clamp before setting the outer clamp and jam nut onto the inner tie rod. Install the retaining bolts on the power steering gear at 95 nm (70 ft. Lbs) torque strength. Position the power steering gear and secure the intermediate shaft with its lower pinch bolt tightened to 47 nm (35 ft. Lbs.). Afterward, reattach the outer tie rod followed by installation of the power steering gear-oriented intermediate shaft. The last step includes wheel installation followed by vehicle lowering then removal of j 42640 from the Steering Column to perform a front toe adjustment.
