    Q:
How to Remove and Replace the Air Bag Clockspring Assembly on Cadillac STS? Posted by Customer
    A:
In order to remove and replace the air bag clock spring assembly / spiral cable, disable the sir system and center the wheels straight ahead, securing the Steering Wheel to the Steering Column anti-rotation pin (J 42640) or a strap to prevent rotation. Unplug the Steering Column, intermediate shaft(s), and steering gear while preventing it from turning with the sir wheel or front tires, for this will move the sir coil assembly from the center position. Remove the Steering Shaft, pull tilt lever if vehicle has tilt column, remove the lower and upper trim covers and remove the torx(R) head screws. Unclip the wire harness straps, gulp the retaining ring, and pull out the sir coil, getting rid of them in case of replacement. During installation, make sure that the new sir coil assembly is centered and do not remove the centering tab before the installation is finished. Install the sir coil assembly to the alignment with the horn tower at the turn signal cancel cam assembly, slide the sir coil into the Steering Shaft assembly and firmly seat the retaining ring. Mount the upper and lower trim covers so they have the tabs in place and apply 2 nm (18 lb in) torque to the screws. On those vehicles with the tilt column, make sure the tilt lever is aligned and secured and install the Steering Wheel to the Steering Shaft. Finally, enable the sir system.
