The supplemental inflatable restraint (SIR) system should always be disabled before commencing air bag clock spring assembly / spiral cable removal or replacement. First remove both knee bolsters according to the right-hand and left-hand drive instructions followed by steering column trim covers. Separate the inflatable restraint steering wheel module coil electrical connectors and harness from the steering column wiring harness connections. The inflatable restraint steering wheel module coil retaining ring must be cleared from the upper Steering Shaft so technicians can extract the module coil itself. The inflatable restraint steering wheel module coil washer should be taken off when required. After removing the Steering Shaft washer reposition the block tooth toward the 12 o'clock position while reinstalling the washer if necessary. Controls for the inflatable restraint steering wheel module coil must be kept centered because rotational movement of the steering column may cause its position to shift unless the spring service lock stays elevated. Install the module coil beside the steering column turn signal switch cancel cam before discarding the centering tab when used. When installing the inflatable restraint steering wheel module coil retaining ring to the upper Steering Shaft be gentle when pulling the lower coil assembly wire free because any kinks can prevent the shaft lock from working properly. Secure each end of the module coil electrical harness to the steering column wiring harness while reconnecting all electrical connectors. Reinstall the steering column trim covers and knee bolster followed by activation of the supplemental inflatable restraint (SIR) system.
