To replace the inflatable restraint steering module coil, first there needs to be a disabling of the sir system. Establish that the wheels are straight ahead and that the steering column anti rotation pin (J 42640) is fitted or ignition switch in lock position to prevent the air bag clock spring assembly from the uncentering. Pull the Steering Wheel off of the Steering Shaft tilt lever straight out if equipped with a tilt column and then remove the lower trim covered by removing the 2 torx® head screws. Next will be the removal of the upper trim cover by unscrewing #2 torx(R) head screws, removing the wire harness straps, and pulling off the retaining ring to remove the air bag clock spring from the Steering Shaft. In the case of replacing, dispose of the old air bag clock spring. For installation, confirm once more that the wheels are straight ahead and if the steering column anti rotation pin(J-42640) is set in place or the ignition switch is in lock position. Position the new air bag clock spring assembly at the centre, align it with the horn tower on the turn signal cancel cam assembly and slide it into the Steering Shaft assembly. Secure the retaining ring into the groove, remove the centering tab from the new air bag clock spring and install the upper trim cover with 2 torx(R) head screws and tighten it to 1.5 n.m (13 lb in). Lastly, install the lower trim cover using 2 torx(R) head screws, making sure the tabs click into place, and tighten to the same torque spec. For the vehicles with tilt column, align and slide the tilt lever handle, install the Steering Wheel on to the Steering Shaft, finally switch on the sir system.
