Q: How to replace the Air Bag Clockspring on Cadillac Escalade?
A: To replace the air bag clock spring assembly, one should first shut off the sir system and take away the steering column trim covers. Next, disengage the wire harness assembly from the wire harness strap and remove the three wire harness straps off the wire harness assembly and remove the wire harness strap from the upper tilt head assembly. Pull off the air bag clock spring retainer clip and the air bag clock spring and remove the wave washer from the steering column upper shaft. For install, position block tooth on the upper shaft at 12 o'clock allowing all fasteners to be seated before applying the required torque to prevent damage to components. Depress the centering spring while holding the wave washer onto the steering column upper shaft, ensuring that the air bag clock spring is centered because it can fall off once the steering column is separated from the steering gear or the centering spring is pressed. If not centered, the right centering procedures of the help for either the standard or tilt column is followed. Make sure the air bag clock spring is lining up with the horn tower on the turn signal cancel cam and install the pre-centered air bag clock spring on the steering column upper shaft. Remove and discard the centering tab, pull gently on the lower coil assembly wire to remove all the kinks and do not have any kinks or bends that can hide the lock mechanism of the shaft. Install the air bag clock spring retaining ring in such a way that it is well seated into the groove at the upper shaft. Reinstall the wire harness assembly into the wire strap, wire harness strap into the wire strap, and wire harness straps to the wire harness assembly. Lastly, reinstall the steering column trim covers and turn on the sir system.
