Before servicing the air bag clock spring assembly / spiral cable users must first disable air bag system functionality. The installation requires detachment of the wire harness assembly from its strap followed by release of the wire harness assembly from three straps. The service begins with the upper tilt head assembly wire harness strap removal and continues with air bag steering wheel module coil retaining clip extraction and air bag steering wheel module coil removal. During this step remove the wave washer from the steering column upper shaft. Perform assembly by setting the block tooth of the upper shaft to 12 o'clock position while fully securing all fasteners before torque application to prevent system failure. Place the wave washer onto the steering column upper shaft before checking that the air bag steering wheel module coil remains centered. The coil can become misaligned when the steering column separates from the steering gear or when the centering spring collapses. Follow standard centering methods regardless of the steering column type if the coil becomes uncentered. Firmly guide the air bag steering wheel module coil along the horn tower on the turn signal cancel cam and position the pre-centered air bag steering wheel module coil onto the steering column upper shaft. Discard the centering tab following its removal then stretch the lower coil assembly wire with care to prevent kinks so no shaft lock mechanism interference occurs. Place the steering wheel coil retaining ring where it should fit in the upper shaft's groove until it creates a firm lock. Begin installation by inserting the wire harness assembly into the wire strap then place the wire harness strap into the wire strap before securing the wire harness straps at the wire harness assembly. Completion of the air bag system activation ends the procedure by reinstalling steering column trim covers.

Disassemble by removing the Steering Wheel assembly along with the tilt lever (if present) followed by removing both upper and lower shrouds. Pop the wire harness assembly off the wire harness strap while extracting its 3 wire harness straps and upper tilt head assembly wire harness strap. After removing the air bag clock spring retaining clip you must remove the air bag clock spring and the wave washer. Before adding torque to the fasteners during installation verify that they are fully inserted because unsuitable force application could break the components. After installing the wave washer check that the air bag clock spring stays in the center position because both a detached Steering Column from the steering gear and a compressed centering spring may cause misalignment. Place the block tooth of the race and upper shaft assembly at the 12 o'clock location before installing the pre-centered air bag clock spring onto the Steering Column and throwing out the centering tab. Check the lower air bag clock spring wire for kinks by pulling it gently until any kinks straighten but watch out for any bends which may impact the shaft lock mechanism. Use the horn tower on the canceling cam assembly inner ring and the projections on the outer ring to guide air bag clock spring installation. Secure the air bag clock spring retaining ring to its designated groove on the upper shaft assembly. Afterwards, pop the wire harness assembly into the wire strap before installing the wire harness strap to the upper tilt head assembly. Place the multi-function switch lever assembly and bolt after reinstalling the 3 wire harness straps from the wire harness assembly. Complete the installation by putting on upper and lower shrouds and tilt lever (if installed) before enabling the sir system.

First service air bag clock spring assembly demands disabling the sir system followed by Steering Wheel removal along with tilt lever (if present) and upper and lower steering column trim covers. Set the pre-centered clock spring into position and dispose of the centering tab while using the horn tower to align with canceling cam assembly inner ring projections on the outer ring. Closely pull the lower clock spring wire while inspecting it for all kinks to guarantee clear paths for the shaft lock mechanism. Set the clock spring retaining ring inside the upper shaft assembly groove then position the wire harness assembly through the wire strap before mounting the wire harness strap to the upper tilt head assembly. Enable sir system only after you reassemble all components including 3 wire harness straps and multi-function switch lever and upper and lower steering column trim covers and tilt lever (if equipped) and Steering Wheel assembly.

Install the pre-centered coil assembly to the steering column, remove the centering tab, and discard it.
