    The first step to replace the automatic transmission shift lever requires you to disable the restraints system following all necessary precautions. As part of the procedure place the shift lever seal above the shift lever and take off the steering column trim covers when needed. The shift lever connector should first be disconnected from its base column position while the shift lever screw has to be removed from the assembly. The linear shift assembly requires the shift lever together with its seal to be extracted while pushing the shift lever seal along the narrow section of the shaft. Insert the shift lever seal into its position on the narrow shift lever end before attaching the shift lever assembly onto the linear shift assembly. Put the shift lever screw into the shift lever assembly before tightening it to 1.5 nm (13 inch lbs.). Lower the shift lever seal along the shift lever assembly until it matches the line of the steering column trim covers. Reinstall steering column trim covers and enable restraints system only when the installation is necessary.
