Steering Column

Any vehicle that underwent an accident with resulting frame damage or signficant body or sheet metal damage or with impacted Steering Column or supplemental inflatable restraint system operation might display misaligned or damaged steering columns. Examine the Steering Column together with the upper Steering Shaft for any signs of damage while checking for cracks and deformations and play and rotational resistance. Change the Steering Column when needed. Apply length measurements to the Steering Column assembly because it should fall within 894.2 - 895.8 mm (35.21 - 35.27 inch) range; any shorter assembly needs replacement. A proper Steering Column inspection requires checking the secure connection of the 2 capsules to the bracket while confirming they do not touching; replace the column if either condition appears. Replace the Steering Column in case any of the two plates show signs of damage. A comprehensive examination of the Steering Shaft coupling must happen to detect damage while searching for cracks and looseness which calls for a replacement if found. Check the lower Steering Shaft for damage while also inspecting it for cracks and examining malfunction, excessive play and excessive rotational resistance. Replace the shaft if needed. The last step should involve checking the Steering Column lower seal for damage or deformities before replacing any defective seals.

The steering column lower seal should be examined for breakage or deformation.

Replace the steering column.

Inspect the steering column jacket and the steering column lower seal, and measure the length of the steering column during the inspection.
