Vehicles subject to frame damage and severe sheet metal and Steering Column impact as well as supplementary air bag activations are likely to have defective Steering Column alignment. Look for proper bracket slot seating of the Steering Column capsule and examine loose attachment points by hand manipulation. The bracket replacement should focus exclusively on the condition of capsules which are not securely seated while attached to the jacket assembly. When the capsules are not securely seated on the bracket but it is welded to the jacket assembly you must replace only the jacket assembly. Measure the distance to find out if the jacket assembly shows signs of collapse and change the complete jacket assembly when measurements fall outside specified limits. Examine whether the tab of the bearing and adapter assembly shows any signs of breakage while verifying if sheared plastic exists on the Steering Shaft; if either defect is present replace the Steering Shaft. Mechanics must inspect Steering Shaft runout using a dial indicator at the lower end of the Steering Shaft and check the runout values during steering wheel rotation to stay below 1.60 mm (0.06 inch).
