Steering Column

Any vehicle that suffers frame damage alongside substantial body or sheet metal damage or encounters Steering Column impact or supplemental inflatable restraint system activation risks having a damaged or misaligned Steering Column. Use manual force to check for capsule seatment into bracket slots of the Steering Column bracket assembly while examining all capsule positions in their brackets. Also verify no loose contacts during manual capsule movements. Check the bracket connection to the jacket assembly for replacement purposes; when the capsules do not fit properly and bolts exist, keep only the bracket yet when the bracket remains welded to the jacket assembly, change only the jacket assembly. Check the jacket assembly distance to verify its collapse state before replacing the assembly if measured specifications do not align. Check for damage to the tab on bearing and adapter assembly components and inspect the Steering Shaft for sheared plastic material; if the shaft contains sheared plastic it needs replacement. A dial indicator measures Steering Shaft runout at its lower end should be conducted to detect frame damage that would bend the Steering Shaft. The runout measurement must remain below 1.60 mm (0.06 in) when steering wheel rotation occurs.
