    Q:
How to replace the intermediate steering shaft on Chevrolet Astro? Posted by Customer
    A:
First establish straight wheel positions and engagement of the lock position on the Steering Column before replacing the intermediate Steering Shaft to avoid coil assembly damage. Insert the Steering Column anti-rotation pin (J 42640) into the lower trim cover's access hole for Steering Column lockup. The installation consists of three steps: removing the underhood electrical center's mounting bolts before relocating the electrical center. The cowl requires removal of its retaining bolts which allows detachment of the intermediate shaft boot while removing the pinch bolt separates the intermediate shaft from the Steering Column. First disconnect the intermediate shaft from the steering gear and remove it from the vehicle. You should join the intermediate shaft to the steering gear shaft before tightening the pinch bolt to 41 nm (30 ft. Lbs.). Drop the intermediate shaft boot over the shaft but leave it loose from the steering gear then connect the shaft to the Steering Column and tighten its corresponding pinch bolt to 41 nm (30 ft. Lbs.). Check the intermediate shaft angle between 38-40 degrees afterward install the intermediate shaft boot to steering gear and cowl through proper bolt placements while tightening cowl mounting bolts to 2.8 nm (25 inch lbs.). After completing underhood electrical center installation secure all mounting bolts at 5.5 nm (49 inch lbs.) then unlock the Steering Column through j 42640 Steering Column anti-rotation pin removal.
