    Q:
How to replace the intermediate steering shaft on Chevrolet Cobalt? Posted by Customer
    A:
Steering Wheel replacement starts with securing the wheel at the straight-ahead position using an anti-rotation pin or lock or strap to prevent wheel rotation that might harm the sir system. First secure the Steering Wheel with a lock then extract the left front tire with its wheel. Steer the car into a straight-ahead position then apply paint to make match marks between the intermediate Steering Shaft and the steering gear pinion shaft. Disassembly starts with removing the steering gear bolt for the intermediate Steering Shaft before disconnecting the intermediate Steering Shaft from the steering gear. For accurate alignment apply match marks to the intermediate Steering Shaft and the steering column shaft and the steering column housing. The steering column requires removal of its intermediate Steering Shaft bolt before disconnecting the shaft from the steering column shaft. Use a bench scraper to dismount the intermediate Steering Shaft seal from the body opening then remove the entire assembly including shaft and seal from the vehicle. The intermediate Steering Shaft bolts should be cleaned with denatured alcohol before receiving an application of general motors threadlocker or blue, medium loctite(TM) 242 on upper and lower bolts. When using new intermediate steering shafts you must move the match marks you recorded from the old shaft to the new one. Place the intermediate steering assembly with its built-in seal into the vehicle so the seal forms a proper seal in the body passage. Use match marks to position the intermediate Steering Shaft against the steering column shaft and steering column housing before installing the shaft and steering column bolt with a torque of 34 nm (25 lb ft). Use intermediate Steering Shaft and steering gear pinion shaft match marks for alignment before attaching the shaft to the gear using a 34 nm (25 lb ft) torque setting. Reinstall the left front tire with its wheel assembly while Steering Angle Sensor calibration is needed when rpo jl4 is installed.
