Accidents leading to frame destruction or large body/deformation or Steering Column impact on vehicles will potentially cause Steering Column damage and misalignment. Check the Steering Column bracket capsules to validate their proper placement within the brackets as well as inspect for loose bracket assembly components when manually tested. If test results show bracket failures, switch to new replacement parts which should be bolted to the jacket assembly or welded to the jacket assembly based on current installation method. Check for jacket assembly collapse by inspecting the distance between the lower edge of the upper jacket and the defined point on the lower jacket to justify replacing the jacket when measurement values exceed specifications. The inspection results for the shift tube must be checked for sheared plastic material and a new shift tube must be installed if any damage is detected. You can identify an upper shift tube plastic bearing break since the shift lever functions in the park position without any lever action. The inspection process of the Steering Column requires letting the inflatable restraint coil assembly hang in the air while rotating the shaft to prevent coil assembly damage. Visual examination for damaged plastic on the Steering Shaft demands installation of a new Steering Shaft when sheared plastic is detected. An inspection of Steering Shaft runout must be conducted at its lower end using a dial indicator while rotating the wheel because frame damage can lead to a bent shaft. The runout cannot exceed 1.60 mm.

The capsules to ensure they are securely seated in the bracket slots and check for any loose conditions.

Look for sheared injected plastic and replace it if damage is found.
