    Q:
How should one safely drain oil from gas charged shock absorbers on Chevrolet Astro? Posted by Customer
    A:
Do not take out the snap ring from inside the tube of gas charged shock absorbers because high-pressure contents will forcefully eject which could lead to serious injuries. Safety glasses should be worn throughout center punching and shock absorber drilling to reduce the risk of personal injury alongside keeping the tube from puncture. A 10 mm (0.4 inch) indentation should be created 10 mm (0.4 inch) from the tube's bottom edge using a center punch tool. Horizontal positioning of the shock absorber in a vise requires a complete extension of the shock absorber rod before clamping the unit. Use a 5 mm (3/16 inch) drill bit to create a hole at the center punch spot on the shock absorber to release either gas or its oil mixture. The process requires shop towels to catch leaking oil. Drill another hole at the center-punched mark of the tube while containing the oil discharge with shop towels. The shock absorber removal process ends by positioning the drain pan under the drain holes while using the rod to move inside the tube until all oil empties out from the shock.

    Q:
How should one safely handle gas charged shock absorbers to avoid personal injury during maintenance on GMC Safari? Posted by Customer
    A:
Do not remove the snap ring inside the top of the tube from gas charged shock absorbers because this could lead to severe injuries when high pressure contents exit with extreme force. Wear protective safety glasses when fighting with the center-punch and operating the drill on shock absorbers because it prevents tube penetration. A center-punch tool should create a 10 mm (0.4 inch) depression at the bottom section of the tube. Place the shock absorber rod in a vise while it extends fully upward. The center-punch hole needs drilling using a 5 mm (3/16 inch) drill bit for gas or gas/oil mixture release with appropriate use of shop towels to contain any oil leaks during the process. After making an indentation using a center-punch in the tube middle you should drill another hole at this mark using the drill bit while stopping the oil leakage with shop towels. Close the vise before you hold the shock absorber rod with its holes directed downward over the drain pan. Move the rod into and out of the tube to empty all oil.
