    Q:
How to service and repair the parking brake shoe on Cadillac Catera? Posted by Customer
    A:
Start service and repair of parking brake shoes by opening the applied parking brake system then using vehicle supports while elevating the vehicle. The service starts by removing the brake caliper alongside the rotor set screw before extracting the brake rotor. First disconnect the parking brake lever return spring from parking brake lever and backing plate before removing the Parking Brake Cable from parking brake lever. The service requires brake spring pliers to detach the Parking Brake Shoe upper return spring and to remove both the parking brake adjuster and the Parking Brake Shoe lower return spring. Using brake spring pliers you need to remove the Parking Brake Shoe lower return spring . The wheel bearing hub flange needs to be oriented toward the widest cutout where the Parking Brake Shoe retaining pin resides. Subsequently remove the brake shoe spring retaining cup and Parking Brake Shoe retaining spring. Perform this sequence once again for the opposite brake shoe retaining spring, retainer and pin removal during the removal of parking brake shoes. The procedure starts with extracting the parking brake lever strut together with its pivot pin. Afterward comes the removal of the parking brake lever. The maintenance team needs to review all components that have been taken out to check for wear signs and damage. The team must replace each damaged or worn part. The shoe pads and adjusting screw threads need lubrication using gm p/n 18010908 lubricant silicone grease gm p/n 18010908 or equivalent but the lubricant must stay away from brake linings during installation. After adding lubricant to the parking brake adjuster threads you must install the Parking Brake Shoe and turn the wheel bearing hub flange to expose its largest cutout position over the shoe retaining pin. The Parking Brake Shoe retainer spring should be installed following the Parking Brake Shoe retainer cup and the same sequence should be repeated for the opposite brake shoe. First reinstall the pivot pin to join the parking brake lever strut with the parking brake lever. Brake spring pliers should be used for the installation of Parking Brake Shoe lower return springs until you complete the installation of the self adjuster and Parking Brake Shoe upper return spring with brake spring pliers. The parking brake adjuster should be extended beyond contact with the Brake Drum by the brake shoes before installation of the brake rotor. The Parking Brake Cable extends to the parking brake lever while the Parking Brake Cable return spring extends to both components as well as to the Brake Backing Plate. Screw in the brake rotor set screw before tightening it to 4 nm (35 inch lbs.) then put it back with the brake caliper. Perform the same procedure for the other side of the vehicle to test parking brake functionality.
