2000 Chevrolet Malibu Tie Rod End Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to replace the outer tie rod end on 2000 Chevrolet Malibu?
A: The replacement process starts with using the universal steering linkage puller (J24319-01) to remove the prevailing torque nut on the outer tie rod assembly. The maintenance continues by loosening the jam nut which controls the inner tie rod assembly before you can remove the outer tie rod assembly from the Steering Knuckle using the same puller. The tie rod assembly should be detached from the inner tie rod assembly. The first step for installation includes fitting the outer tie rod assembly to the inner tie rod but leaving out the jam nut tightening. Secure the prevailing torque nut on the outer tie rod stud after you connect the tie rod assembly to the knuckle. Apply force of 20 nm (14 ft. Lbs.) to the prevailing torque nut and use an additional 180 degrees of rotation for both the Rack and Pinion Boot maintenance. Complete the toe adjustment by tightening the jam nut against the outer tie rod 68 nm (50 ft. Lbs.).
