2000 Chevrolet Monte Carlo Flywheel Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to service and repair the flex plate and replace the engine flywheel on 2000 Chevrolet Monte Carlo?
A: Begin all flex plate and engine Flywheel maintenance by taking off the transaxle. The Flywheel holder (J 37096) should be used to immobilize the crankshaft before slowly loosening the eight engine Flywheel bolts. Before dropping the engine Flywheel, cut off power while loosening seven of the eight bolts one at a time starting from the top of crankshaft rotation. Use hand strength to remove the last bolt. The installation process for the new engine Flywheel requires the use of Flywheel holder (J 37096) to stop crankshaft rotation. The new engine Flywheel bolts need to be tightened to 15 nm (11 ft. Lbs.) with the torque angle meter (J 36660-A) used to achieve an additional 50-degree rotation. This procedure must keep the crankshaft end play in a single direction. Use a dial indicator to measure engine Flywheel runout at three attaching bosses on the engine block as part of the inspection process; if runout falls outside specifications and cannot be corrected the engine Flywheel will need replacement. Finally, install the transaxle.
