2000 Chevrolet Prizm Brake Booster Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to replace the vacuum brake booster on 2000 Chevrolet Prizm?
A: Before replacing the Vacuum Brake Booster obtain these necessary tools: Booster Push Rod Gauge (J39567) Booster Push Rod Gauge (J39567). Start by taking out the master cylinder. When a vehicle uses ABS brakes you must remove the brake pressure modulator valve assembly together with the accompanying bracket. First disconnect the hose clamp together with the hose from the booster before removing the brake pedal return spring. Dispose of the cotter pin along with the clevis pin and wave washer from the push rod clevis before removing the four nuts (7, 8, 12, 13) and booster assembly with gasket and bulkhead clevis . Position the new gasket between the booster assembly and bulkhead then fasten the booster assembly with four nuts (7, 8, 12, 13) tightened to 13 Nm (108 inch lbs.). After installing the clevis pin and wave washer together with its cotter pin you can then attach the brake pedal return spring. First position the gasket then mount the bracket for the brake pressure modulator valve assembly followed by installation of three nuts that remain loose. Position the Booster Push Rod Gauge (J39567) on a new master cylinder gasket then manipulate the pin until it reaches the master cylinder piston point before removing the gauge to flip it upside down. Place the gauge on the bracket for the brake pressure modulator valve assembly when ABS exists. Place the gauge onto the booster assembly if a vehicle does not have ABS. A 0 mm (0 inch) clearance measurement should exist between the booster piston rod and the gauge. When the length doesn't match have an assistant push the brake pedal to extend the booster piston rod then manipulate the rod until it just touches the pin head. Install brake pressure modulator valve assembly before master cylinder under these conditions while torquing master cylinder nuts to 13 Nm (108 inch lbs.). Secure the hose to the booster assembly through its clamp. Bleed the brake system before conducting an inspection for leaks while making brake pedal travel adjustments and using a torque wrench on the clevis lock nut to 26 Nm (19 ft. lbs.). Complete the inspection with reserve distance and free play tests of the brake pedal and booster assembly.
