2000 GMC Safari Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to service and repair the timing chain on 2000 GMC Safari?
A: Begin the Timing Chain servicing by putting the crankshaft balancer key in the keyway while making sure the key runs parallel to the crankshaft and a minimal incline exists. Use the j 5590 installer (J 5590) to position the keyway of the crankshaft sprocket correctly with the crankshaft balancer key before installation. First position the crankshaft at 12 o'clock mark so you can install the camshaft sprocket that should be aligned at 6 o'clock position followed by the installation of the camshaft Timing Chain. Check that the crankshaft sprocket points straight up at 12 o'clock and the camshaft sprocket faces downward at 6 o'clock. Using a hammer when installing the camshaft sprocket onto the camshaft can dislodge the expansion cup plug in the camshaft rear bearing hole therefore this method should be avoided. Secure the camshaft sprocket bolts with specifications setting torque at 25 nm (18 ft. Lbs.). Begin by positioning the keyway of the reluctor ring with the balancer key of the crankshaft. Then use tool j5590 to push the ring onto the crankshaft until it reaches the sprocket completely.
