2002 GMC Savana 3500 Tie Rod Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to replace a tie rod on 2002 GMC Savana 3500?
A: For tying rod replacement you need to acquire universal steering linkage puller (J24319-B) along with steering linkage installer (12 mm) (J29193) and steering linkage installer (14 mm) (J29194). Position the safety stands under the vehicle while elevating it using a suitable lift. First detach the nut which secures the ball stud of the inner or outer Tie Rod. The universal steering linkage puller (J24319-B) will help detach both the outer Tie Rod ball stud from the Steering Knuckle and the inner Tie Rod ball stud from the relay rod. Fold back the clamp bolts to start the removal process of the adjuster tube Tie Rod ends by unscrewing the Tie Rod End assemblies. Before testing the ball stud and nut threads along with tapered surfaces of the fixture inspect the Tie Rod End for damage as well as excessive wear on seals and check any thread damage on the Tie Rod and Tie Rod End including ball stud threads and adjuster tube features. Install the Tie Rod ends onto the adjuster tube after lubricating their threads with chassis lubricant while maintaining thread equality within three threads. The installation of the inner Tie Rod ball stud onto the relay rod requires careful placement of the seal on the stud before torqueing either the steering linkage installer (12 mm) (J29193) or the steering linkage installer (14 mm) (J29194) to 54 nm (40 ft. Lbs.) for taper seating. Use a new torque prevailing nut on the inner Tie Rod ball stud where you installed it with 47 nm (35 ft. Lbs.) torque. After fixing the Steering Knuckle with the outer Tie Rod ball studs the installation must be finished by tightening new torque prevailing nuts to 47 nm (35 ft. Lbs.). Seating adjuster tube clamp bolts at the correct positions which place the dimples for location between an angular travel range with the sleeve slot out of the clamp opening. Use the adjuster points to slowly rotate the inner and outer Tie Rod ends until they reach full travel but keep them in position so that each joint moves freely. Tighten adjuster tube clamp bolts to 25 nm (18 ft. Lbs.) before you take away safety stands and lower the vehicle.
