2003 GMC Envoy Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to replace the lower intermediate steering shaft on 2003 GMC Envoy?
A: To replace the lower intermediate Steering Shaft, make sure that the front wheels are pointed straight and the Steering Column is in lock position to avoid miscorrection and damage to the sir coil assembly. Start by adjusting the wheels by turning the steering wheel, then switch the ignition switch to the lock position and take off the key. Use the Steering Column lock pin (J42640) to lock the Steering Column through the access hole at the lower trim cover. Next, remove the upper intermediate shaft boot from the lower intermediate shaft boot to access the upper to lower intermediate pinch bolt and remove the lower intermediate shaft to upper intermediate shaft pinch bolt and disconnected from the lower intermediate shaft to upper intermediate shaft. Remove the lower intermediate shaft boot from the power steering gear and pull it out of the vehicle. Lift and support the vehicle, with reference to the relationship of the intermediate shaft to the power steering gear and Steering Column for good installation. Obtain the lower intermediate shaft to power steering gear input shaft pinch bolt and unhook the lower intermediate shaft from the power steering gear. During installation, return the lower intermediate shaft to the vehicle and attach it to the power steering gear, with the consideration of following the fastener notice in service precautions. Mount the lower end of intermediate shaft with the power steering gear input shaft to the pinch bolt and tighten with a torque of 40 nm (29ft.lbs). Slightly lower the vehicle and then install the lower intermediate shaft boot and connect it to the power steering gear. Join the lower intermediate shaft to the upper intermediate shaft according to the fastener notice in service precautions, and tighten the lower intermediate shaft to upper intermediate shaft pinch bolt to 50 nm (37 ft. Lbs.). Make sure the upper intermediate shaft boot encloses the white insert of the lower intermediate shaft boot and seal it correctly, then hook up the upper intermediate shaft boot to the lower intermediate shaft boot. Lastly, pull the Steering Column lock pin (J42640) through the access hole in the lower trim cover to unlock the Steering Column.
