  A: A service or repair job on the constant velocity joint starts with halfshaft removal from the automobile followed by horizontal clamping in a vise using a towel around the halfshaft bar. Cut the large retaining clamp from the boot with side cutters before discarding it. Use a hand grinder to cut the halfshaft bar swage ring before moving the boot backward from the cross groove joint cleavage to clear grease from the joint assembly. After applying j8059 to the cross groove joint's race retaining ring ears the ring needs to be discarded. Detach the cross groove joint assembly from the halfshaft bar while maintaining the inner race and cage parallel to the outer race position. The transmission retaining ring on the cross groove joint assembly gets removed with j8059 before disposal of both the inner boot and swage ring from the halfshaft bar. Use parts brush and solvent to clean the joint while using a wire brush to remove rust from boot mounting grooves. Measurement of the cross groove joint assembly must happen before replacement of the component if damage is detected. Insert a new swage ring onto the neck of an unswaged inner boot before fitting the inner boot onto the halfshaft bar so it rests correctly in its boot groove . Use tool j41048 to position the halfshaft assembly's inboard end while avoiding damage to the wheel drive shaft's inboard seal. Use j41048 to swage the ring while it aligns with the boot until the bolts reach a secure tightness level before their complete tightening. Before final assembly tighten the bolts on j8059 to place the new race retaining ring properly into the inner race. First spread half the grease distribution across the cross groove joint assembly before filling the inner boot with the rest of the grease material. At this point install the new transmission retaining ring on the cross groove joint assembly while keeping the large clamp placed over the inner boot's large end using j8059. Use j8059 to push the cross groove joint assembly onto the halfshaft bar until the retaining ring finds its groove before stroking the joint to a dimension of 271 mm (10.7 inches) while checking for inner boot damage or stretch. Use j35910 with a breaker bar and torque wrench to tighten the large boot retaining clamp up to 176 nm (130 ft. Lbs.) until it reaches 1.9 mm (0.075 inches) gap measurement. Fully stretching the cross groove joint multiple times will spread grease across the assembly before reinstalling the halfshaft into its position.
