• Q: How to replace the lower intake manifold on 2004 Chevrolet Impala?

  A: A replacement of the lower Intake Manifold begins with removing the upper Intake Manifold and the generator brace along with drive belt tensioner with its mounting bracket and heater water bypass inlet pipe. Start by removing the bolt on the exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) outlet pipe from the lower Intake Manifold then disconnect the radiator inlet hose from the water outlet housing followed by removing the engine coolant temperature (ECT) sensor electrical connector. Begin by removing the right upper engine mount strut bracket and generator brace bracket bolts then the generator brace bracket followed by lower Intake Manifold bolts to finally remove the lower Intake Manifold and its seals and gaskets. Lower Intake Manifold replacement requires removal of the water outlet housing bolt and stud in addition to the water outlet housing, gasket, thermostat and ect sensor. Check the flatness of both inlet flanges while cleaning the mating surfaces between the Intake Manifold and the bolts and bolt holes by removing excess adhesive. If the ect sensor was removed, install it and tighten to 25 nm (18 ft. Lbs.)install the Thermostat along with the gasket and water outlet housing before securing the bolt and stud to 27 nm (20 ft. Lbs.). Position the lower Intake Manifold gaskets after coating their seal ends with gm p/n 12346286 (Canadian P/N 10953472) or equivalent sealant before installing the lower Intake Manifold seals and the lower Intake Manifold itself. Use gm thread lock compound p/n 12345382 (Canadian P/N 10953489) or equivalent to protect two hidden Intake Manifold bolts. Install all lower intake bolts using a torque sequence of 15 nm (11 ft. Lbs.). Reinstall the generator brace bracket and its bolts, tightening them to 50 nm (37 ft. Lbs.)skew this sequence right to install the right upper engine mount strut bracket. Attach the electrical connector for the ect sensor while placing the radiator inlet hose onto the water outlet housing and connect the egr outlet pipe to the lower Intake Manifold with a torque of 29 nm (21 ft. Lbs.). Install the drive belt tensioner together with generator brace and upper Intake Manifold then inspect all components for any signs of leakage.
