2004 Chevrolet Tracker Drive Shaft Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to Service and Repair a Two-Piece Drive Shaft on 2004 Chevrolet Tracker?
A: The vehicle must be raised into position before starting two-piece drive/propeller shaft repairs and servicing. The technician should apply identification marks to both the pinion flange yoke and the differential pinion flange. The mid shaft bearing support bolts must be removed before taking off the 4 bolts coupled with the 4 nuts bearing lock washers. Begin service of the two-piece propeller shaft assembly by removing it along with the sliding yoke from the transmission. Examine the shaft for any visible damages then replace it if found. The universal joints should pivot smoothly but if they become tight or bind then installation of new assembled units is required. Replace worn and rounded sliding yoke splines after performing an examination for defective or damaged components. When inspecting the sliding yoke evaluate its surface condition because replacement is needed if it has scored or rough areas. The inspection should evaluate the pinion flange yoke for any signs of damage such as cracks and distortion which would necessitate a replacement. To install the yoke into the transmission you must insert it with the propeller shaft assembly while providing lubrication to the splines at the sliding yoke. The mid shaft bearing support should be set at a 90-degree angle to propeller shaft center lines then install mid shaft bearing support bolts and tighten them to 50 nm (37 ft. Lbs.). The differential pinion flange gets connected to its yoke through reference points by four bolts and four nuts that include lock washers until they produce a torque of 50 nm (37 ft. Lbs.). Finally, lower the vehicle.
