2004 GMC Savana 1500 Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to overhaul the rear brake calipers (15 Series) on 2004 GMC Savana 1500?
A: When handling the rear brake caliper (15 Series) you must first take it out from the vehicle to replace its components. Never put your fingers near the Piston when applying compressed air. Instead use a thin wooden stick to protect the parts. Push the brake Piston to its end by blowing compressed air through the brake hose inlet but first disconnect both the Piston boot and Piston seal. Search for damage at the brake caliper bore and Piston seal groove after you remove the brake caliper bleed screw cap and screw. Replace the brake caliper housing when needed. If the brake caliper mounting bracket guide surfaces show damage from corrosion or wear you must replace the bracket. Every trace of dirt needs removal from the brake pad locations on the brake caliper housing and mounting bracket. Use denatured alcohol to clean all components except those in this kit and dry them with non-lubricated compressed air before blowing out all channels in the brake housing and bleeder valve. To assemble the brake device add the brake caliper bleed screw then thread it in until it reaches 12 nm force before attaching the bleed screw cap. Apply brake fluid to both sides of the new Piston seal and the bore seal groove before installing the seal smoothly into the groove without twisting it. Apply brake fluid to the brake caliper bore and Piston before inserting the boot over the Piston with its fold toward the brake caliper chamber. Position the boot in both grooves then slide the Piston down until it reaches the bottom. Press the brake caliper down until the boot fits securely into both coolant paths before returning the brake caliper to its original position.
