2005 Chevrolet Astro Battery Cable Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to replace the positive battery cable and check for excessive resistance on 2005 Chevrolet Astro?
A: Use the j 39200 digital multimeter to inspect battery positive cable resistance as poor terminal connections and worn insulation insulation affect voltage drops and cause hard starting. Perform all checks only when the transmission is in park position while having the parking brakes engaged and blocking the vehicle wheels. Test the voltage drop by disconnecting the battery at the distributor before checking between the following pairs: the battery negative terminal to the vehicle frame and the battery positive terminal to the Starter terminal stud and the Starter housing to the frame when operating the Starter. Any voltage reading that reaches beyond 0.5 volts requires cleaning the connections while replacing damaged cables with ones of equal length and diameter. The procedure to remove the battery positive cable includes detaching the battery positive cable bolt from the battery alongside the Starter motor cable and electrical convenience center lead then removing the cable. When installing the new battery positive cable use the rwd or a4wd original positions before connecting it to the Starter Solenoid and initial tightness of 9 n.m (80 lb in) should be applied to the solenoid battery terminal inner nut for protection. Start by connecting the additional battery positive cable lead to the underhood electrical center then tighten it to 9 n.m (80 lb in). The battery positive terminal bolt installation should be completed next by securing it to the battery then tightening it to 15 n.m (11 lb ft).
