2005 Chevrolet Colorado Camshaft Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to replace the camshaft on 2005 Chevrolet Colorado?
A: The first step to replace the Camshaft includes removal of the Camshaft cover followed by the Camshaft position (CMP) sensor. Rotate the Crankshaft clockwise until the #1 Piston is at top dead center (TDC) on the compression stroke, ensuring the word delphi on the exhaust Camshaft position actuator is parallel with the Cylinder Head to cam cover mating surface. The Camshaft holding tool (J 44221) must be installed behind the camshafts before removing the intake and exhaust Camshaft sprocket bolts which become waste material. Place the Camshaft sprocket holding tool (J 44222) onto the Cylinder Head while adjusting the horizontal bolts to keep Camshaft sprocket tension correctly aligned. Move the sprockets with timing chains off the camshafts onto the j 44222. Foster loose Camshaft cap bolt engagement until all valve spring pressure is neutralized before placing Camshaft caps on a rack for efficient reinstallation. After removing the j 44221 along with the Camshaft caps you should separate the camshafts from the Cylinder Head for cleaning while conducting an inspection. For installation, coat the Camshaft journals, thrust face, and lobes with clean engine oil, then install the j 44221 with the Camshaft flats up and the #1 Piston at tdc. Place both intake and exhaust camshafts in their factory positions when installation is complete while checking that all marks on Camshaft caps match the intended alignment. Tighten both Camshaft caps evenly until the valve springs reach full compression then finalize bolt torque at 12 nm (106 inch lbs.). Align sprockets during installation by attaching a 25 mm (1 inch) wrench to the camshafts' hex segment. Remove j 44222 by sliding the sprockets with Timing Chain from the j 44222 to the camshafts. After installing new intake Camshaft sprocket bolt along with new exhaust Camshaft actuator bolt, torque the intake bolt to 20 nm (15 ft. Lbs.) while employing angle meter (J 45059) to achieve 100-degree bolt rotation. The exhaust Camshaft actuator bolt receives a 25 nm (18 ft. Lbs.) torque setting followed by 135 degrees of additional rotation with the angle meter (J 45059). To complete the repair, install the Camshaft position (CMP) sensor after removing j 44221 then return the Camshaft cover.
