2005 GMC Safari Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to replace the distributor on 2005 GMC Safari?
A: To replace the Distributor, one may start by turning off the ignition, remove the engine cover, air cleaner assembly, and air intake resonator assembly. Remove the Spark Plug Wires from the Distributor Cap by twisting the wires 1/2 turn and tugging out only the wires boot. Pull harness connector from the bottom of the Distributor, then remove the 2 screws on the Distributor Cap to the housing, and get rid of them. Take off the Distributor Cap and use a grease pencil to make the mark of the rotor to indicate where the rotor is in relation of the Distributor housing and the anatomic manifold. Remove the Distributor while noting that rotor will go about 42 degrees counter-clockwise and place a second mark on the base of Distributor for proper rotor alignment during reinstallation. Unscrew the mounting clamp hold-down bolt and remove the Distributor. For installation procedure 1 in case of the installing a new Distributor assembly, 2 marks will be applied on a new Distributor housing which are considered to be in the location as the old one. Bring the rotor in line with the second mark, align the hold-down base's hole over the mounting hole in the Intake Manifold . Guide the Distributor into the engine. As we install the Distributor, the rotor will rotate to the right by 42 degrees. Make sure that the rotor segment lines up with the mark at the Distributor base ; if this is not possible, replace the Distributor. Mount the Distributor mounting clamp bolt and tighten it at 25 n.m (18 lb ft). Mount the Distributor Cap and fasten the new cap screws to a torque of 2.4 n.m (21 lb in). Reconnect the electrical connector, attach the Spark Plug Wires to the Distributor Cap and attach the ignition coil wire, having in mind the correct orientation of the wire boot. In case the malfunction indicator lamp comes on after the installation, refer to installation procedure 2. For installation procedure 2, turn the crankshaft balancer clockwise until the alignment mark on the balancer aligns with the tabs on the front cover of the engine, ensuring the number 1 Piston is at the end of the compression stroke- the tdc. Shoe the white paint mark on the bottom stem of the Distributor straightly with the pre-drilled indent hole at the bottom of the gear. To prevent a no-start situation, mark the Distributor driven gear, shaft, rotor holes, for distribution (for reassembly). Use a long screwdriver to line up oil pump drive shaft to the drive tab of the Distributor, then slide the Distributor down into the front on engine using the flat side of Distributor housing. Once firmly seated, one should then make sure the rotor segment is lined up with the pointer cast in the Distributor base; if not, repeat the procedure. Mount clamp bolt of Distributor clamp and tighten to 25 n.m (18 lb ft), followed by installing the Distributor Cap and tighten new cap screws to 2.4 n.m (21 lb in). Re-install the electrical connector, jack the Spark Plug Wires back into the Distributor Cap, and plug in the ignition coil wire with the correct orientation of the wire boot. The installation of the Distributor was incorrect if the malfunction indicator lamp has been illuminated after installation and dtc p1345 has been stored. Finally, install the engine cover.
