Clean the engine front cover while checking that the crankshaft oil seal and front cover gasket should not be reused and prevent using sealant on the gasket unless explicitly stated. Lay down a 5 mm (0.20 in) bead of sealant gm U.S. P/N 12378190 or the equivalent with a 20 mm (0.80 in) length along the junction between the Oil Pan and engine block. Position the new front cover gasket along with the cover while tightening front cover bolts and Oil Pan-to-front cover bolts only until proper snugness is reached before concluding with bolt torque adjustment. The front and rear cover alignment tool (J 41476) helps position the crankshaft front oil seal right in the center so its tapered legs match the machined surfaces on the front cover.
