• Q: How to replace the outer CV Joint and seal on the wheel drive shaft on 2007 Cadillac CTS?

  A: To replace the wheel drive shaft outer joint and seal, an assembly of tools will be needed, which include; j 41048 drive axle swage ring clamp, j 8059 snap ring pliers, and j 35910 drive axle seal clamp pliers. Start by cutting off the large seal retaining clamp holding the CV Joint with a side cutter and discarding it and do not cut into the wheel drive shaft inboard seal in the process. Remove the swase ring using a hand grinder to cut through it and detach the halfshaft outboard seal from the CV Joint outer race at the large diameter to slide it away from the joint alongside the half shaft bar. Remove the grease from the CV Joint inner race and separate the ears of the race retaining ring with j 8059 before taking the CV Joint assembly from the halfshaft bar. Demount the old outboard seal and use a brass drift to gently tap and tip the CV Joint cage to expose all six chrome alloy balls. Clean the inner and outer race assemblies, the CV Joint cage, and the chrome alloy balls using the cleaning solvent and allow to dry; scrutinize some for unusual wear, cracks, or damage and replace any broken parts. Clean any rust on the half shaft bar using a wire brush to the seal mounting area. For assembly, place the new swage ring on the neck of the outboard seal without swaging, then push the outboard seal onto the halfshaft bar, it places it into seal groove. Swage the ring, alining the outboard seal, halfshaft bar and swage ring, with j 41048, tighten the bolts in turn until tight. Inspect a swaged ring for deformity and do the re-swaging if required. Put a light coat of grease from the service kit on the ball groves portion of the inner and outer races and put the inner race into the cage and aligning it with the outer race. Put in the chrome balls, packing the CV Joint with grease and making sure that the outboard seal is properly shaped. Last but not least, aligning the large diameter of the outboard seal with the space of the large seal retaining clamp into the CV Joint outer race, crimp the same using j 35910 to the torque specified to inspect the gap dimension on the clamp ear until achieving the required measurement.
