2007 Chevrolet Corvette Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to Service and Repair Differential Bearings on 2007 Chevrolet Corvette?
A: Service and repair operations on carrier bearings require the following tools: dt-48008 press support/pinion bearing installer (DT-48008) and dt-48009 shim selection adapters (DT-48009) together with j 42155 getrag axle Differential housing lifting tool (J 42155) and j 42168-1/j 42168-9/j 42168-11/j 42168-16/j 42170 getrag axle becoming a part o servicing carrier bearings requires the following tools: dt-48008 press support/pinion bearing installer (DT-48008), dt-48009 shim selection adapters (DT-48009), j 42155 getrag axle Differential housing lifting tool (J 42155), j 42168-1 shim measuring tool (J 42168-1), j 42168-9 shim measuring tool (J 42168-9), j 42168-11 shim measuring tool (J 42168-11), j 42168-15 compressor assembly (J 42168-15 Use the J 42168-9 to remove its thumbscrew from the J 42168-1 . Afterward extract the J 42168-1 from the Differential housing's left bearing cup bore with precision through tool level positioning. Position the bearing cup onto the DT-48009-2 and place the Differential case onto the DT-48009-2 with the bearing cup allowing the Differential rotation to seat the bearing on its race. After placing DT-48009-3 in the DT-48009-1 hollow, ease the thumbscrew to enable the rod to meet the bottom of bearing race bore before tightening the thumbscrew. Use a ring gear bolt to connect the DT-48009-3 to the Differential's ring gear side then remove it from DT-48009-1. After placing the DT-48009-3 rod above the center of the DT-48009-2 gage block service 3.42 Z06 differentials at the DT-48009-2 gage block location. Use a feeler gage to measure the C1 distance between the DT-48009-3 rod and DT-48009-2 gage block then calculate C2 by subtracting C1 from a 3 mm (0.118 in) nominal value. As the a2 value appears on the ring gear's side but does not necessarily match the d nominal value of 65.8 mm (2.59 in). To determine left side Differential Bearing shim requirements, calculate c3 by subtracting the d nominal value from the a2 measurement then combine c2 and c3 to find the correct shim dimension for which you can select appropriate shims. Use the dt-48008 to hold the Differential housing before removing the pinion housing/cage bolts and the pinion housing/cage from the Differential, and proceeding to separate the j 42168-11 , bearings (2 and 5), spacer , and dt-48009-1 from the pinion housing/cage . Assemble the specified bearing race together with shim using the dt-48008 and assisted by j 42170 while using a hydraulic press. Use a hammer with a brass punch to drive the ring gear into its appropriate position when aligning it with the Differential's bolts. User j 42173 to mount the Differential assembly where new ring gear bolts should be torqued to a tightness value of 145 n.m (107 lb ft). After using the j 42155 to install the Differential case into the Differential housing, install the right side bearing cup and the j 42168-15 on the Differential while making sure the oil seal is removed from the right cover and the pinion housing/cage remains uninstalled. Install the Differential cover with j 42168-16 bolts and spacers, torque them to 30 n.m (22 lb ft). A feeler gage inside the j 42168-15 helps measure the right side Differential Bearing shim size. After gap measurement, remove all bolts and cover along with tools. Put the chosen shim together with bearing cup into the right cover while using the j 42170 and hydraulic press for installation.
