2007 GMC Sierra 3500 Classic Drive Shaft Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to replace a one-piece Drive Shaft on 2007 GMC Sierra 3500 Classic?
A: The first step to replace the one-piece propeller shaft requires making precise reference marks on every driveline component that relates to axles and shafts before disassembly so the pieces can be reassembled in their original positions. The next step should be a vehicle lift along with unique markings of the propeller shaft relative to the axles' pinion yoke and transmission or Transfer Case. The first step requires removing the bolts along with yoke retainers which connect to the rear axle pinion yoke. Keep the injection joints safe from damage by refraining from using tools between the Universal Joint and the yoke along with preventing you from pounding the yoke ears. First disconnect the propeller shaft from the rear axle pinion yoke forward before sliding it backward to remove it from the transmission or Transfer Case and finally taking out the propeller shaft from the vehicle. The installer should examine the Slip Yoke splines to check for sufficient lubrication and apply gm p/n 12345879 grease if needed for rwd automatic transmission models only. After connecting the propeller shaft to the transmission or Transfer Case the installer needs to align the reference marks they marked during disassembly. The process continues with connecting the propeller shaft to the rear axle pinion yoke by following the reference marks made during removal. The yoke retainers together with their bolts need installation before securing the yoke retainer bolts at a torque specification of 25 n.m (18 lb ft). After these procedures are complete lower the vehicle.
