2008 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to replace the shift cable on an Allison automatic transmission on 2008 Chevrolet Silverado 1500?
A: As a first step to replace the range selector lever cable in an allison automatic transmission first position the Steering Column shift lever to park and then raise the vehicle. First disconnect the bolts securing the range selector cable heat shield while keeping the transmission manual shaft in mechanical park position. First disconnect the transmission range selector lever stud from the range selector cable end before removing the bracket connector. Use the tang depressors to detach the cable from the range selector cable bracket then remove cable clips installed on both the floor panel reinforcement and Transfer Case brackets. Make sure that the Steering Column shift lever stands in park position when the vehicle is at its lowest point. Remove the driver compartment insulation and carpeting before removing the instrument panel knee bolster. Detaching the cable retainer from the Steering Column requires caution to prevent unnecessary cable twisting or bending before you disconnect the cable end from the ball stud. Remove the cable from both the support along with the grommet from within the floor panel. The new cable must be positioned into the vehicle while the grommet should be installed to the floor panel but avoid any cable twisting or bending. Attach the cable to the support and confirm that the transmission manual shaft lever points toward mechanical park. You should attach the cable end to the Steering Column ball stud and hold it steady with the retainer after you secure the cable to the Steering Column bracket while verifying that the tangs fully rest inside the seat. First position the carpet covering together with insulation, then reinstall the instrument panel knee bolster. Place the vehicle back in its original position for installing both cable retention brackets: the first one goes on the Transfer Case when available and the second one fits at the floor panel reinforcement point. After confirming the manual shaft inside the transmission is set to mechanical park position you should install the range selector cable to its bracket while using the retainer to secure it. Tighten manually the heat shield bolts starting by securing the front bolt first followed by the rear bolt in order to avoid misalignment. Reinstall the heat shield and connect the cable end to the transmission range selector lever stud. Secure the bolts to 25 n.m (18 lb ft) while lowering the vehicle before testing transmission shifting accuracy because cable adjustment might be necessary if any range cannot be reached.
