2009 Chevrolet Tahoe Crankshaft Seal Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to replace the front crankshaft seal on 2009 Chevrolet Tahoe?
A: The first step to replace the crankshaft front oil seal is to remove the crankshaft balancer. You need to extract the crankshaft front oil seal (140) from the front cover. The correct procedure requires non-oil lubrication on the oil seal sealing surface and complete avoidance of front crankshaft oil seal reuse during installation. Clean engine oil must be applied at the outer edge of the oil seal (140) and the front cover oil seal bore before starting the installation process. Place the crankshaft front oil seal (140) onto the dedicated J 41478 (Crankshaft Front Oil Seal Installer). The first step entails positioning the J 41478 threaded rod with its attached nut, washer, guide, and oil seal into the crankshaft end while using the J 41478 for correct installation of the oil seal into the cover bore. Use a second wrench to rotate the installer nut clockwise until the seal rests completely within the cover bore while holding the hex of the installer bolt with a wrench. Always check the oil seal installation in the front cover bore after removing the J 41478 by inspecting it for proper and uniform distribution of the seal inside the bore. Finally, reinstall the crankshaft balancer.
