2010 Buick Enclave Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to replace the inner tie rods in the steering linkage on 2010 Buick Enclave?
A: After removing the steering gear from the vehicle check the inner Tie Rod for contamination or corrosion under the boots because replacement of the steering gear is required if any issues exist. Expose the steering gear by removing its two boots and fasten the component to a vice unit. Do not modify the preload adjustment before handling the inner Tie Rod since this may lead to damage. The left shock dampener should be removed from the left inner Tie Rod housing to the rack while pipe wrenches must be positioned at the steering gear valve end next to the inner Tie Rod housing and rack's proximity to the left inner Tie Rod housing. Apply counterclockwise torque to separate by using a wrench on the left inner Tie Rod housing flats. A wrench applied to the flats of left inner Tie Rod housing should be turned counterclockwise to break the connection from rack. Execute this procedure on the right inner Tie Rod as well. The inner Tie Rod threads require loctite(R) removal before installation when its configuration consists of a female rack with a male inner Tie Rod but no loctite(R) needs removal in cases where the rack has a male component and the inner Tie Rod has a female component. Verify that the left inner Tie Rod threads receive loctite(R) 262 only after thoroughly cleaning them and verifying the product's validity by examining the expiration date on the container. Utilize a pipe wrench combined with a torque wrench having j-34028 to tighten the left inner Tie Rod on the rack at 100 nm (74 lb ft). The right inner Tie Rod threads will receive loctite(R) 262 before installation. Then tighten this rod using the same method. Inner Tie Rod assemblies should be placed into vise-style clamps but female rack/male Tie Rod setups need no staking whereas female Tie Rod/male rack designs must receive staking to both rack surfaces. Before installing the shock dampeners for the right and left inner Tie Rod housings, ensure that the stakes maintain 0.25 mm security using a gage. Then insert the shock dampeners into their housings until they reach the end points. Insert the two steering gear boots into their places before reattaching the steering gear component to the vehicle.
