During front suspension maintenance technicians should treat gas charged shock absorbers with extreme caution because of their high-pressure gas content. Begin your operation by using a centerpunch to make a 10 mm (0.4 in) indentation at the tube bottom. Position the shock absorber rod into maximum extension before fixing it across the vise. With a 5 mm (3/16 in) drill bit and at the centerpunch location, make a hole that will allow gas or gas/oil mixture to escape while shop towels catch the oil. Using the centerpunch before drilling two holes into the tube goes next. The second hole gets positioned at the centerpunch which gets closed again using shop towels for containing oil leakage. Position the shock absorber rod over the drain pan so all holes face downward before moving it back and forth to eliminate oil from inside the device.
