Cadillac Catera Automatic Transmission Filter Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to change the automatic transmission filter and fluid on Cadillac Catera?
A: A vehicle needs to be properly raised then supported before performing fluid change operations on the transmission. Place a drain pan under the transmission main case oil pan and use a screwdriver to remove the bolts in front and on the sides before loosing the bolts in the rear section by turning them four times. Use a rubber mallet gradually to hit the transmission oil pan when draining fluid from the main case oil pan. The process requires removal of both transmission Oil Filter bolts and the transmission Oil Filter together with the transmission Oil Filter gasket. A drain pan should be placed under the transmission front oil pan before removing the rear bolts from the pan followed by slow removal of the front bolts while leaving only one corner bolt loose. Use a rubber mallet or pry tool to tap the oil pan gently in order to empty fluid. Use solvent to clean the transmission main case and transmission front adapter case together with Oil Pan Gasket surfaces and Oil Filter gasket surfaces while completely wiping away the gasket material residues before the components dry in air. Start the installation process by fitting the transmission Oil Filter gasket together with the transmission Oil Filter before securing the transmission Oil Filter bolts at 20 nm (15 ft. Lbs.). The front transmission oil pan gets installed after gasket placement with its bolts achieving a tightness level of 11 nm (96 inch lbs.). The correct installation of the transmission main case oil pan includes application with its gasket followed by tightening each main case oil pan bolt to 11 nm (96 inch lbs.). Fill the transmission with dexron iii by using an oil suction gun until the oil level reaches the lower part of the oil pan fill plug opening and secure the fill plug with 45 nm torque. To complete the inspection check the transmission fluid level while the vehicle remains lowered.
