Chevrolet K3500 Shock Absorber Parts Questions & Experts Answers
Q: How should one safely drain oil from gas charged shock absorbers on Chevrolet K3500?
A: It is dangerous to remove the snap ring from inside the tube of gas charged shock absorbers due to high internal pressure that could release contents with explosive force. The prevention of injuries demands wearing safety glasses during both shock absorber center-punching and drilling operations while avoiding any hole in the shock absorber tube. Start the procedure by creating a 10 mm (0.4 inch) deep indentation at the tube bottom by using a center punch tool. Secure the shock absorber across a vise when its rod extends fully outward. Use a drill with a 5 mm (3/16-inch) bit to make a hole at the center punch point while using shop towels for the escaping oil. After drilling your first hole in the tube using the 5 mm (3/16 inch) drill bit at the center punch mark, make a new indentation at the middle of the tube with a center punch prior to drilling the second hole using the same drill bit. Use shop towels to manage the escaping oil at both steps. To drain all the shock absorber oil place the holes in the bottom position and pull the rod in and out of the tube while holding the shock absorber over the drain pan.
