    Q:
How to replace the shift cable on Chevrolet Corvette? Posted by Customer
    A:
The first step to replace a Shift Cable entails placing the floor shift control in neutral position because the cable replacement is only successful when both the floor shift control and the transmission are set to neutral. Support the vehicle at proper height. The removal of the intermediate Exhaust Pipe allows access to the transmission control assembly for cable extraction while you need to remove the driveline tunnel closeout panel thereby making sure to avoid unplanned movement of the Shift Cable because of its rigid rod end guide tubes. Install the large flat-bladed screwdriver to ease the Shift Cable end clip from the floor shift control arm stud while pulling the Shift Cable free from the driveline tunnel bracket through bracket slot removal by depressing retaining tab clips then slotting the cable out of openings in the bracket. Live out the Shift Cable end clip from the transmission shift lever stud while you extract the Shift Cable from the Shift Cable bracket by removing its retaining staple clip through bracket tab depression followed by tab hole penetration until the cable slides free of its bracket slot. To install a Shift Cable hang the smaller diameter section into the bracket slot then push retaining tabs through the housing to lock the cable before securing it with the staple clip. The Shift Cable end must be attached to the floor shift control arm stud before installing the same procedure to the Shift Cable bracket. Install the Shift Cable end clip onto the transmission shift lever stud; when using a new cable release the shipping guard from the adjuster lock before depressing the adjuster lock. Lower the vehicle onto the hoist but leave it there as you make sure the Shift Cable functions correctly by using the parking brake, turning the ignition to on without starting and pressing the brakes followed by shifting through all gears to listen for proper transmission shift lever sounds. Shift Cable inspection should be performed if either binding exists or transmission shift lever fails to produce sound. After placing the floor shift control into park you must release regular brakes then turn off the ignition key as well as the parking brake. The driveline tunnel closeout panel installation should proceed after supporting the vehicle back up before you connect the intermediate Exhaust Pipe. End your testing phase by driving the vehicle through empty areas to confirm proper transmission shifting both into detent positions and their maintained states.
