2007 Chevrolet Corvette Shift Cable Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to replace the Automatic Transmission Range Selector Shift Cable on 2007 Chevrolet Corvette?
A: The first step of changing the Shift Cable requires vehicle elevation followed by supportive positioning. The repair requires setting the floor shift control to neutral position with the transmission also in neutral status if you handle a busted cable. Disassemble the Shift Cable by removing both the catalytic converters and driveline tunnel closeout panel while avoiding aggressive movements on the Shift Cable because its rod end guide tubes resist bending effectively. Use a large flat bladed screwdriver to delicately remove the Shift Cable end clip from the floor shift control arm while also loosening the Shift Cable from the driveline tunnel bracket by separating the retaining staple clip from the cable through pushing its tabs past the hole in the bracket followed by sliding the cable from the bracket slot. Release the Shift Cable end clip from the transmission shift lever stud with care while removing the Shift Cable from the Shift Cable bracket through the process of removing the Shift Cable retaining staple clip from the cable followed by tab depression and tab passage through the bracket hole leading to cable bracket slot extraction. The installation of the Shift Cable starts by inserting its smaller diameter end into the slot of the driveline tunnel bracket then forcing the retaining tabs through the hole for locking the cable before inserting the Shift Cable retaining staple clip into the tabs. After attaching the Shift Cable end to the floor shift control arm stud you should install the Shift Cable to the Shift Cable bracket by sliding the smaller diameter section into the slot before forcing the tabs through the hole to lock the cable and placing the Shift Cable retaining staple clip between the tabs. The end clip of the Shift Cable needs to be secured to the transmission shift lever stud. Before installing a new transmission Shift Cable users must remove its shipping guard which covers the adjuster lock and adjust the Shift Cable lock. You should first lower the vehicle while keeping it on the hoist before testing the Shift Cable movement by performing these steps: engage the parking brake, turn the ignition switch to on position, apply normal brake pressure, move the floor shift through the neutral to first to second to drive sequence while listening for an audible transmission shift lever noise during one second detent pauses. Repeat the shift from park directly to first and perform this procedure another two times. Listen for an audible transmission sound and check for binding sensations during this step. Damage to the Shift Cable may exist if there are problems with either detection. After placing the floor shift control in park position users should let go of regular brakes and shut off the ignition switch and then release the parking brake. Return the vehicle to normal height and put on the driveline tunnel closeout panel followed by installation of the catalytic converters. Use a low-traffic area for testing the transmission to verify proper shift operation as well as stable maintenance of detent positions.
