    Q:
How to replace the connecting rod bearing on Cadillac Catera? Posted by Customer
    A:
To replace the connecting Rod Bearing, the engine is first stripped of the engine oil baffle and the cylinder(s) being serviced for the plug(s). If you want to turn the crankhub torx socket (J 42098) rotate the Crankshaft until we position the connecting rod at bottom dead center (BDC). Take off the connecting rod cap bolts and then take the connecting rod cap off and the lower connecting Rod Bearing off, making sure not to damage the mating surfaces. Clean the connecting rod journal and lubricant with clean engine oil to avoid destroying the plastic thread of the plastic gage. Place a strip of plastic thread on the connecting rod journal and then apply the connecting rod cap with the connecting Rod Bearing. The connecting rod bolts are reusable for checking clearance; tighten the connecting rod cap bolts to 35 nm (26 ft. Lbs.). Rotate the connecting rod cap bolts first to 45 degrees and then subsequently to another 45 degrees using the torque angle meter (J 36660-A). Don't forget to pry out the connecting rod bolts and connect Rod Bearing cap, measure the width of the flattened plastic thread and callibrate the scale on the plastic gage package, the allowed tolerance should be between 0.010 - 0.061mm (0.0004 - 0.0024 inch). Next, using the connecting rod guide (J 41742) access the upper connecting Rod Bearing pushing up the connecting rod and piston and disassemble the upper connecting Rod Bearing. For installation, lubricate the connecting Rod Bearing journals with clean engine oil and install the upper connecting Rod Bearing; pull down connecting rod and piston over wearable Crankshaft journal with the connection rod guide (J 41742). Take out the guide, fit connecting rod cap with connecting Rod Bearing, and clean new connecting rod cap bolts with torque 35 nm (26 ft. Lbs.). Once again, utilize a torque angle meter (J 36660-A) to rotate the connecting rod cap bolts by 45 degrees the first time and 45 degrees the last turn (if the initial at that point utilizing the helicoil assembly). Lastly, replace the Spark Plug(s) & engine oil baffle.
