Safety depends on proper analysis followed by correct maintenance of seat belt systems after any traffic event. Car manufacturers must substitute every seat belt system that experienced automatic restraint activation through collisions that needed air bags and seat belt pretensioners to activate. A complete inspection must be done on all systems that secure both adult passengers and child restraints and infant carriers and booster seats along with LATCH system and top tether anchorages. A complete replacement of the seat belt system needs to occur for all its components whenever torn or worn or damaged parts are detected such as adult seat belts together with built-in child restraints and LATCH system components. The seat belt system requires replacement when "REPLACE" or "CAUTION" labels appear or yellow warning tags are found however replacing the system only because of child seat caution labels is not sufficient. The complete seat belt system consisting of buckle along with guide and retractor assembly must be discarded together with latch and webbing material instead of separating individual components. Chemically restrained car safety systems do not need replacement unless the parts show signs of wear or tearing or damage following minor accidents that did not activate the system.
